Philodendron 'Birkin'

Philodendron 'Birkin' is a striking tropical houseplant known for its elegant cream-and-white pinstripes against glossy, deep green foliage. New leaves often emerge predominantly green, with the distinctive striping becoming more pronounced as the foliage develops. Because the pattern varies from leaf to leaf, every plant creates its own unique display of intricate variegation.

Unlike trailing Philodendrons, 'Birkin' has a compact, self-heading growth habit with sturdy stems that create a structured, upright appearance. Its relatively slow growth and tidy form make it perfect for desks, shelves, tabletops, and smaller indoor spaces. Occasionally, plants may produce leaves with unusual patches, reddish tones, or different striping patterns—a fascinating characteristic of this naturally variable cultivar.

Height: 2–3 feet
Spread: 1–2 feet
Habit: Upright, Self-Heading
Exposure: Medium to Bright Indirect Light
Plant Type: Tropical Houseplant

Why You'll Love It:

  • Beautiful Pinstriped Foliage: Fine cream and white markings create dramatic contrast against deep green leaves.
  • Every Leaf Is Different: Variegation naturally changes from leaf to leaf for an ever-evolving display.
  • Compact & Upright: Its self-heading habit stays tidy without needing a trellis or moss pole.
  • Collector Appeal: Unique and sometimes unpredictable foliage makes each plant especially interesting.
  • Easy to Display: Perfect for desks, shelves, plant stands, and other smaller indoor spaces.

Whether displayed as a sophisticated tabletop accent or added to a colorful Philodendron collection, 'Birkin' delivers intricate foliage, compact growth, and plenty of personality.

Philodendron 'Birkin' Basic Care: Easy to Medium

Watering: Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry. Water thoroughly and allow excess moisture to drain away. Avoid keeping the soil constantly wet, as Philodendrons are sensitive to overwatering.

Light: Provide medium to bright indirect light. Bright, filtered light supports strong growth and attractive variegation. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which can scorch the foliage.

Soil/Drainage: Use a chunky, well-draining tropical or aroid mix. Adding orchid bark and perlite provides additional airflow and helps prevent excess moisture around the roots.

Temperature/Humidity: Prefers temperatures between 65–85°F and moderate to high humidity. It adapts to average household humidity but may grow more vigorously with additional humidity.

Feeding: Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength. Reduce feeding during fall and winter.

Repotting: Repot every 1–2 years or when the plant becomes rootbound. Use a container with drainage holes that's only slightly larger than the existing pot.

General Tips: Because 'Birkin' can naturally produce variations in its foliage, don't be surprised to see occasional leaves with different striping, solid sections, or reddish coloration. Rotate the plant periodically for even growth, and gently wipe the leaves to keep its beautiful pinstriping clean and visible.

Order & Shipping Info:

-Plants ship in a grower's pot, fully rooted.
-We ship every Monday and Tuesday (excluding holidays) to avoid weekend delays.
-Our photos show what you can expect, but each plant is unique and may look slightly different upon arrival.
-Minor damage during shipping is entirely normal and should be expected, especially in extreme summer or winter temperatures. Don’t worry—damaged foliage can be trimmed away and will not affect the plant's root system or overall health.
-Hold off on watering if the soil is still moist, and wait 2-4 weeks before repotting or fertilizing. This patience will help your plant adjust smoothly without going into shock.
