Monstera adansonii, commonly known as the Swiss Cheese Vine, is a fast-growing tropical houseplant loved for its distinctive perforated foliage. Each deep green leaf develops natural oval-shaped openings called fenestrations, creating the playful, airy appearance that gives this plant its familiar nickname. It is also sometimes known as the Five Holes Plant or Adanson's Monstera.

Monstera adansonii Basic Care: Easy

Watering: Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry. Water thoroughly and allow excess moisture to drain away. Avoid keeping the soil constantly soggy.

Light: Thrives in medium to bright indirect light. Bright filtered light encourages vigorous growth and healthy foliage. Avoid prolonged direct afternoon sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.

Soil/Drainage: Use a loose, well-draining tropical or aroid mix. Potting soil amended with perlite and orchid bark provides excellent drainage and airflow around the roots.

Temperature/Humidity: Prefers temperatures between 65–85°F with moderate to high humidity. It adapts to average household humidity but appreciates additional humidity for lush growth.

Feeding: Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength. Reduce feeding during fall and winter.

Repotting: Repot every 1–2 years or when the plant becomes rootbound. Choose a container only slightly larger than its current pot and always provide adequate drainage.

Support: Let the vines trail naturally, or provide a moss pole, trellis, or other vertical support. Climbing encourages larger foliage and can help the plant develop a more mature appearance.

General Tips: Prune long vines as needed to encourage fuller growth. Monstera adansonii is also very easy to propagate from stem cuttings with a node, making it simple to fill out the original pot or start additional plants.
