Yucca filamentosa 'Color Guard'

'Color Guard' Yucca is a bold, architectural perennial prized for its dramatic variegated foliage and exceptional toughness. Slightly arching, sword-shaped leaves feature broad creamy-yellow to ivory centers bordered by rich dark green, creating striking color and texture year-round. Its structured form makes it an excellent focal point in landscapes that need strong contrast and year-round interest.

In midsummer, mature plants send up impressive flower stalks topped with clusters of fragrant, snow-white, bell-shaped blooms. Beautiful yet remarkably resilient, 'Color Guard' tolerates heat, drought, wind, humidity, and challenging growing conditions once established. Use it as a specimen, mass planting, border accent, or dramatic addition to water-wise and rock gardens.

Height: 3–4 feet
Width: Up to 4 feet
Habit: Upright Rosette, Clumping
Exposure: Full Sun
Foliage: Cream & Green Variegated
USDA Zones: 4–10

Why You'll Love It:

  • Year-Round Variegation: Creamy centers and dark green margins provide beautiful color even when the plant isn't blooming.
  • Showy Summer Flowers: Tall spikes of fragrant white blooms create a spectacular midsummer display.
  • Extremely Tough: Tolerates heat, drought, wind, humidity, and challenging landscape conditions.
  • Deer & Rabbit Resistant: Tough, sword-like foliage is generally avoided by browsing animals.
  • Architectural Accent: Its bold form is perfect for borders, rock gardens, containers, mass plantings, and waterwise landscapes.

Whether planted as a dramatic focal point or repeated throughout a low-maintenance landscape, 'Color Guard' Yucca delivers bold structure, beautiful variegation, and impressive durability throughout the seasons.

Color Guard Yucca Basic Care: Easy

Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season while the root system becomes established. Once established, 'Color Guard' is highly drought-tolerant and typically needs supplemental water only during prolonged dry periods.

Light: Plant in full sun for the strongest growth, best flowering, and brightest foliage coloration. It can tolerate some light shade, though growth may be less vigorous.

Soil/Drainage: Prefers well-draining soil and performs especially well in sandy, gravelly, or relatively lean soils. Avoid consistently wet or poorly drained locations, particularly during winter.

Temperature/Hardiness: Hardy in USDA Zones 4–10 and tolerant of both summer heat and cold winter conditions.

Feeding: Requires very little fertilizer. If desired, apply a light amount of balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring. Avoid excessive feeding.

Pruning: Remove spent flower stalks after blooming and trim away old or damaged foliage near the base as needed. Wear gloves when working around the stiff, pointed leaves.

General Tips: Choose a location with plenty of sunlight and excellent drainage for the best performance. Once established, 'Color Guard' Yucca requires very little attention and is an excellent choice for xeriscapes, rock gardens, erosion control, borders, and other hot, dry areas where lower-maintenance plants are preferred.

Order & Shipping Info:

-Plants ship in a grower's pot, fully rooted.
-We ship every Monday and Tuesday (excluding holidays) to avoid weekend delays.
-Our photos show what you can expect, but each plant is unique and may look slightly different upon arrival.
-Minor damage during shipping is entirely normal and should be expected, especially in extreme summer or winter temperatures. Don’t worry—damaged foliage can be trimmed away and will not affect the plant's root system or overall health.
-Hold off on watering if the soil is still moist, and wait 2-4 weeks before repotting or fertilizing. This patience will help your plant adjust smoothly without going into shock.
