Rhipsalis baccifera

Mistletoe Cactus is a unique tropical cactus prized for its long, cascading stems and effortless, elegant appearance. Unlike desert cacti, Rhipsalis naturally grows as an epiphyte in the rainforests of South and Central America, where it clings to tree branches beneath the forest canopy. Interestingly, it is also the only cactus naturally found outside the Americas, with populations occurring in parts of Africa and Sri Lanka—likely spread by migratory birds carrying its seeds.

Its smooth, branching stems create a graceful waterfall of greenery, making it a perfect choice for hanging baskets, shelves, and elevated planters. Mature plants may produce tiny white flowers followed by small ornamental berries, adding even more charm to this easy-care tropical houseplant. With its love of humidity and bright, filtered light, Rhipsalis brings a lush rainforest feel to any indoor space.

Height: 15–18 inches (trailing)
Spread: Vines continue to lengthen with age
Habit: Trailing, Cascading, Epiphytic
Exposure: Partial Sun to Shade (Bright Indirect Light Indoors)
Plant Type: Tropical Houseplant

Why You'll Love It:

  • Unique Tropical Cactus: A rainforest cactus with elegant trailing stems instead of spines.
  • Perfect Hanging Plant: Cascading growth makes it ideal for baskets, shelves, and plant stands.
  • Pet Friendly: Non-toxic to cats and dogs.
  • Easy to Grow: More forgiving than many tropical houseplants and well-suited to indoor conditions.
  • Delicate Blooms: Mature plants may produce tiny white flowers followed by decorative berries.

Whether you're looking to soften a plant shelf or add a unique trailing specimen to your collection, Rhipsalis offers lush texture, tropical charm, and low-maintenance beauty year-round.

Rhipsalis Basic Care: Easy

Watering: Allow the top inch of soil to dry between waterings, then water thoroughly. Unlike desert cacti, Rhipsalis appreciates more frequent watering but should never sit in soggy soil.

Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light or partial shade. Avoid prolonged direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the stems.

Soil/Drainage: Use a chunky, well-draining cactus or orchid mix amended with perlite and orchid bark to mimic its natural epiphytic growing conditions.

Temperature/Humidity: Prefers temperatures between 45–95°F, with ideal growth occurring in warm conditions between 65–80°F. Appreciates moderate to high humidity.

Feeding: Feed once a month during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength. Suspend feeding during winter.

Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when rootbound using a container with drainage holes.

Order & Shipping Info:
-Plants ship in a grower's pot, fully rooted.
-We ship every Monday and Tuesday (excluding holidays) to avoid weekend delays.
-Our photos show what you can expect, but each plant is unique and may look slightly different upon arrival.
-Minor damage during shipping is entirely normal and should be expected, especially in extreme summer or winter temperatures. Don’t worry—damaged foliage can be trimmed away and will not affect the plant's root system or overall health.
-Hold off on watering if the soil is still moist, and wait 2-4 weeks before repotting or fertilizing. This patience will help your plant adjust smoothly without going into shock.
