Epiphyllum anguliger ‘Fire’
Epiphyllum anguliger 'Fire' (Fire Ric Rac Cactus) is a rare and eye-catching tropical cactus prized for its dramatic zigzag foliage and vibrant reddish-orange new growth. Unlike desert cacti, this epiphytic species naturally grows in the canopies of tropical forests, where it thrives in bright, filtered light and higher humidity. As new stems mature, their fiery bronze tones gradually deepen to rich green, creating beautiful contrast throughout the growing season.
Perfect for hanging baskets and elevated planters, the cascading, fishbone-shaped stems create an architectural display that becomes even more impressive with age. Mature plants may reward you with large, fragrant nighttime blooms, making this unique houseplant as exciting to grow as it is to admire. Non-toxic to pets and surprisingly easy to care for, 'Fire' is an excellent choice for collectors and beginners alike.
Fire Ric Rac Cactus Basic Care: Easy
Watering: Allow the top half of the soil to dry before watering thoroughly. Water less frequently during the winter when growth slows, and never let the plant sit in standing water.
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. A little gentle morning sun is fine, but avoid harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch the stems.
Soil/Drainage: Use a chunky, fast-draining cactus or orchid mix amended with perlite and orchid bark. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
Temperature/Humidity: Thrives in temperatures between 60–85°F and appreciates moderate to high humidity. Protect from temperatures below 50°F and cold drafts.
Feeding: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength. Stop fertilizing during the winter.
Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when rootbound. Choose a pot with drainage holes that's only slightly larger than the current container.
General Tips: As a tropical epiphytic cactus, this plant prefers more moisture and humidity than desert cacti. It's ideal for hanging baskets where its distinctive zigzag stems can cascade naturally. Mature plants may produce large, fragrant nighttime blooms when given bright light, consistent care, and a slight reduction in watering during winter.
