Sturdy succulent with tongue-shaped leaves arranged in two ranks, thick-fleshy, rounded below, dark green with white blotches slightly raised (tubercles) and rough horny edges. These plants produce flowers that are generally pink or red and look like little stomachs with a tube at the end, hence the plant's name (which means "stomach" in Latin). Despite the graphic association, the blooms are very pretty and appear in clusters on long stems in the spring.
